Public Record Office the history of creation and function in 1838-1958

Abstract

The article deals with the history of the Public Record Office of Great Britain from its foundation in 1838 till 1958 when the Public Records Act was passed. The paper analyses the reasons of the formation of the Public Record Office and the main directions of its activity during the indicated period: acquisition, preservation, finding aids creation, document usage, and also issues of the access to archival documents. The article describes the contribution of parliamentary committees that have been appointed to put forward the proposals for carrying out archival reforms. It is noted that decentralization of archives administration resulted in the Public Records Act which turned out to be the milestone in the regulation of the system of archival institutions of Great Britain.
