Развитие науки об архивах в Великобритании неразрывно связано с именем Хилари Дженкинсона и с его трудом «Руководство по управлению архивами» (A Manual of Archive Administration), который был опубликован в 1922 г. Многие принципы, излагаемые Дженкинсоном, считаются уникальным вкладом в архивную науку. Тем не менее некоторые исследователи отмечают, что «архивная жизнь» была и до него, что многие идеи не только существовали, развивались, но и были доступны для общественности, так как были уже опубликованы. Данная статья посвящена тем персоналиям, которые сформировали Британскую теорию архивоведения (British archival theory) в конце XIX – начале XX в. Одним из таких исследователей считается Хуберт Холл, являвшийся не просто современником Х. Дженкинсона, но и работавший с ним примерно в одно время в Государственном архиве Великобритании (Public Record Office) с 1906 по 1921 г. Х. Холл также преподавал в Лондонской школе экономики (ЛШЭ) (London School of Economics (LSE)), после лекций и семинаров которого многие слушатели, в основном женщины, были приняты на работу в качестве историков, исследователей и архивистов. Они внесли немалый вклад в развитие архивного дела в Великобритании.

The development of archival science in the UK is inextricably linked to the name of Hilary Jenkinson and his “Manual of Archive Administration”, which was published in 1922. Many of the principles he described in his work are considered unique contributions to archival science. However, some researchers note that there was “archival life” before Jenkinson, that many ideas did not only exist, but they had already been developed. Having been published, they were available to the public. So, this article deals with those personalities who formed the British archival theory in the late 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. One of them was Hubert Hall, who was not only H. Jenkinson’s contemporary, but also worked with him at about the same period at the Public Record Office (PRO) from 1906 to 1921. Besides, H. Hall lectured at the London School of Economics (LSE), and after his lectures and seminars many students, mostly women, were employed as historians, researchers and archivists. They made a significant contribution to the development of British archival theory and practice.
